SOS hoop tournament highlights holiday festivities

For decades the Thanksgiving holiday break has been the strict domain for football fans. From high school to the NFL, the gridiron has become synonymous with Thanksgiving.

But more and more, we are starting to see basketball enthusiasts trying to cut out their own share of the holiday. Basketball tournaments have been popping up each year around the country.

One of those that is looking to become a Thanksgiving staple in the state of Oklahoma is the annual Sick of Sickle Cell High School Showcase. Now in its second year, the showcase is already drawing some of the top teams from all classes in the state.

 Hosted by Putnam City West Assistant coach Allen Russell and his Sick of Sickle Cell non-profit organization, the event will take place Nov. 26-27 at Putnam City West High School (800 NW 23rd St, OKC).

The showcase features boys’ and girls’ basketball teams from across the state. They include the likes of Oklahoma City Millwood, Northwest Classen, Lawton MacArthur, Newcastle, Ardmore and Putnam City West.

For most of the teams competing, this will be the official start of the 2021-22 season,

There are three games set for Friday. and five more on Saturday.  Action tips off at 1 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door.

Proceeds from the showcase will go to the Sick of Sickle organization, which is dedicated to improving the social health and quality of life for children, adults and families living with Sickle Cell.
