It’s pretty easy to tell whenever Louie Jones makes a big play for the Mustang defense. About a half beat after the 6-foot-1, 280-pound defensive tackle gets a sack or stuffs a ball carrier in the hole, the fans at Bronco Stadium scream out “Louie.”
In only four games into his junior season, Jones has already garnered that type of adulation from the students and fans at Mustang.
But it is a position defensive coordinator Waleed Gaines knew was coming all the way back during the spring. Since then he has been raving about Jones and his potential to help the Broncos defense. And that is how it has played out so far this season.
“He’s a dude, that’s all I’m going to say,” Gaines said. “We heard the (Springdale) Har-Ber coach talk about their game plan. They could not block Louie one-on-one, so they doubled him They could not block Louie one-on-one. Every team going in is going to try to double team that kid because if you don’t double team him, it could be a situation.”
While Jones was on the roster last year, his time on the field was limited. After transferring to MHS from Kansas, he had a lot to pick up.
“Last year I was a backup and I had to learn the plays,” Jones said. “Just getting in my book, learning the plays and asking questions.”
Jones said he came into the season with the mindset of proving to everyone that he could play at a high level.
Jones describes his style of play with one word. Power. NFL Hall of Famer Warren Sapp is the player that he says he most resembles.
Yet, according to Gaines, when he is away from the gridiron, his skillset is a little more subtle.
“He’s a basketball kid. He wants to play basketball,” Gaines said. “He thinks he’s dang. Steph Curry out here. I’m telling you right now, the dude thinks he’s a real point guard out here.”
While opposing offensive linemen probably wish Jones was on the hardwood, Gaines said he is only scratching the surface of his potential on the football field.
