When Taylor Robertson arrived at the University of Oklahoma in 2018, everyone knew she could shoot. The Kansas native had made her name as a prolific perimeter shooter throughout her prep career.
However, even Robertson couldn’t imagine the heights she would reach. The redshirt senior
shattered the NCAA women’s career 3-point record, hitting her 498th career 3-pointer during the 86-78 loss to Iowa State on Jan. 28.
Robertson, who tied Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell’s NCAA record earlier in the week, broke the record with her first shot attempt of the day at Hilton Coliseum. She went on to bury six total 3-pointers on the day, pushing her past 500 for her career.
“It’s really cool to break the record just because of all the people that are up there on the list,” Robertson said. “I wish I would’ve broken the record in a win because that’s what matters, but it’s definitely something that means a lot to me.”
Since then, Robertson has continued to extend her record with six more 3-pointers over the following two games to push her to 509.
Robertson’s 509 makes are the most of any woman at the Divison I, II or III level, and she has scored over 2,000 points in her career.
“She just loves the game so much,” Oklahoma coach Jennie Baranczyk said. “You can tell she has built it herself. She’ll beat any one of you in NBA trivia. She’s been so fun to coach. She just plays with a joy.”
Reaching this record caught the attention of Golden State star Steph Curry, who is also Robertson’s idol. He just happened to be playing in Oklahoma City two days after Robertson broke the record and wanted to meet her.
Curry sent Robertson a special video message congratulating the record breaker.
“Just wanted to say congratulation on breaking the all-time NCAA women’s Division-I 3-point record, 498 threes,” Curry said. “Now, I know you’re going to keep adding to that number and probably make it hopefully something that will never be broken. To go from making eight threes in your first college game against Western Kentucky to now 498, that is an amazing, amazing accomplishment. I only made 414 threes in college, so you’ve been having me beat.”
Curry met up with Robertson after going through his pre-game warm up. He then proceeded to score 38 points in a win over the Thunder. He then gave his game jersey to Robertson after the game.
“It’s crazy knowing she just broke the record … and we were coming through town and she had a night off,” Curry said. “Pretty cool to see her, celebrate her accomplishment.”
It meant even more to Robertson.
“Everything and more,” Robertson said. “It was so cool. It’s unreal. It’s something I dreamed about, just being able to meet him, talk to him. It’s just really cool because I want to play like him.”
